Retro-Futuristic

Retro-Futuristic

Imagine a sleek spaceport shining in chrome, tube computers humming, neon adverts promising a brighter tomorrow. Your crew travels on a monorail above cloud-level gardens, taking a call from a concerned magnate. A prototype robot has gone missing during a lunar expo. Were rivals involved, or is the machine learning too much? Anticipate ray gun standoffs, jetpack chases between art deco towers, and starlit parties where every smile conceals a patent war. Retro styling sets the scene, while discovery, intrigue, and bold stunts propel the story forward.

At the table, it comes alive. The visuals are clear, allowing players to engage quickly, even if it is their first game. Families appreciate wholesome gadgets and courageous heroes. Teams enjoy playful futurism that inspires ideas and fosters safe collaboration. Veterans savour pulpy pacing, serial cliffhangers, and room for satire about yesterday's tomorrow. It excels for one-shots featuring a mystery or a daring heist, and expands into campaigns about rival corporations, Martian colonies, and the cost of progress.

Our Game Masters run it using flexible, fast systems. Popular choices include Savage Worlds for kinetic action, Fate Core or Atomic Robo for pulp science, Lasers & Feelings for breezy crews, and Starfinder or Rocket Age when you want to explore planets. The tone is easy to adjust. Bright optimism and screwball comedy, shiny utopia with flaws, or smoky retro noir with tough choices. Explore options across many game systems, then select the flavour that suits your group.

Frequently Asked Questions

What distinguishes retro-futuristic from cyberpunk or space opera?

Retro-futuristic looks like yesterday’s tomorrow, not a neon dystopia. Imagine chrome rockets, art deco stations, cheerful robots, and analogue dials. Stories draw on pulp intrigue and invention, featuring expos, patent disputes, daring rescues, and robot ethics. Cyberpunk centres on surveillance, hacking, and scarcity. Space opera often zooms in on galaxy-spanning wars and mystical powers. Retro-futuristic typically remains closer to home, focusing on the solar system, corporate labs, and optimistic civic projects with their flaws. Technology is flashy and charming, so scenes emphasise daring stunts, clever gadgets, and witty diplomacy rather than grim survival. This contrast shapes the tone, and

Which game systems are suitable for retro-futuristic play?

For retro-futuristic adventures, Atomic Robo is perfect if you’re after mad science stunts and clever teamwork. Fate Core effortlessly captures the pulp tone and custom gadgets. Savage Worlds offers dynamic chases, fast-paced combat, and enjoyable ray gun mechanics. Lasers & Feelings is ideal for light-hearted crew escapades. Starfinder provides structured starships and planetary exploration. Rocket Age brings classic solar-system pulp to life. A professional Game Master can recommend options and tailor the complexity to suit your group. Explore systems and find what suits your preferences here: game system overview.

Is this genre suitable for first-time players or children?

Yes. The tropes are clear, so new players pick them up quickly. You can play as a test pilot, reporter, robot companion, or star diplomat. Equipment like ray guns and jetpacks is straightforward. Our Game Masters can utilise rules-light systems, pre-generated characters, and clear objectives. For children or mixed-age groups, they can keep danger mild, replace lethal options with stun settings, and focus on puzzles, teamwork, and daring rescues. For adults new to RPGs, they can introduce intrigue and satire without cumbersome rulebooks. No prior sci-fi knowledge is required.

What occurs in a typical one-shot adventure here?

Expect a focused caper with vibrant set pieces. Many one-shots commence with a briefing at a world’s fair or lunar expo, then follow clues to a rival lab, a monorail chase, and a cocktail negotiation among inventors. You typically receive pre-generated characters and signature gadgets, allowing play to begin swiftly. Scenes blend social sleuthing, daring stunts, and a set-piece test of a prototype. A professional Game Master provides vintage handouts, radio-style announcements, and safety tools. You leave with a solved mystery, a difficult decision regarding progress, and the option to continue if your group desires more. For pacing styles, see GM playstyles.

What players think

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a really good job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot and yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His attitude was fantastic, and he made the game enjoyable for all. I particularly appreciated how he could clearly explain what was required from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a wonderful time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thank you!

    Casey

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I arranged a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is very enthusiastic about it, and he was thoroughly pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • A very good GM, Baptiste adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. One issue was with the character sheets provided, which were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells (no healing spell) even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they'd ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach enabled the players to fully immerse themselves in the game by allowing them to control how they wanted their actions to be carried out. I would certainly work with her again.

    John

  • A pleasant and straightforward introduction to D&D. Amber was adept at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the rhythm and concentrate on the narrative. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack strategies was an enjoyable experience and provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a highly enjoyable session.

    Jens

    Triodos Bank N.V.

  • Pim is truly brilliant as a DM! Cheerful, adaptable, and exceptionally experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in an enjoyable manner and engaged every player in the story, regardless of whether they were vocal or reserved. If you embark on an adventure with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
