Werewolf: The Apocalypse

Werewolf: The Apocalypse immerses you in a contemporary world brimming with spirits, secrets, and corporate decay. You take on the role of a Garou, a shapeshifter dedicated to safeguarding a wounded Earth and your pack. The narratives oscillate between vibrant urban alleys and dense forests. Anticipate occult rituals, intense investigations, and difficult decisions regarding violence and compassion. At its core lie themes of found family, honour, and fury. If you enjoy urban fantasy with an edge, this is the game for you. It is a mature experience that addresses horror, activism, and identity with seriousness.

A session feels like a thriller, punctuated by bursts of primal action. You follow leads, negotiate with enigmatic forces, and then strike swiftly. The pack collaborates and shines as one. New players can easily join, while veterans can delve deeper. It is ideal for one-shots, birthdays, and team events that seek collaboration and catharsis, whether online or in person. A professional Game Master can adjust the tone from gritty to mythic, ensuring everyone feels safe and engaged. Meet available Game Masters here: browse GMs.

How to play Werewolf: The Apocalypse

Werewolf uses pools of ten-sided dice. You select an approach, the Game Master sets a difficulty, then you roll Attribute plus Skill dice and count successes. More successes overcome tougher challenges. Your supernatural fury is a resource, but it can backfire if you push too hard. Most of the gameplay involves conversation. You describe your intent, and the GM responds with what it costs or the associated risks. Dice are rolled when failure would be significant, or when claws and silver are involved.

You bring a character concept, a pack role, and lines and veils for safety. A tribe, an auspice, and a totem can shape your identity. The Game Master introduces the territory, rival packs, spirit courts, and conspiracies. They explain the rules at the table and guide the tone. Before play begins, you agree on the mood, level of violence, and themes. If you have a particular vibe in mind, choose a GM whose style aligns with it at GM playstyles.

In a one-shot, the pack undertakes a focused mission. This could be a raid on a polluter’s lab or a rite to cleanse a haunted bridge. Quick builds or pre-generated characters help maintain the pace. In a campaign, you claim a caern and a neighbourhood. You earn renown, forge alliances, and confront slow-burn corruption. Politics with elders and spirits become more complex. Personal scars and triumphs add depth. The Game Master tracks arcs so your pack’s legend grows with each session.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m new. Do I need to learn the rules or lore first?

No previous experience is required. A professional Game Master will teach the d10 system at the table, explain forms and Rage, and keep jargon to a minimum. You can use pre-generated characters or receive quick assistance to create your own. The introduction establishes your pack’s goals and boundaries, ensuring you always know what to do next. All you need is curiosity. Dice and character sheets are provided for both online and in-person play. Meet Game Masters and choose someone who matches your vibe at browse GMs.

Which edition are you running, and what are the differences?

You can request W5 or W20. W5 is the 2023 edition from Renegade. It streamlines dice pools, sharpens Rage and Auspice rules, and focuses on personal horror in a contemporary setting. W20 celebrates the classic metaplot with a broad range of Gifts, tribes, and rites, and is somewhat more complex. Some Game Masters can also run Revised or earlier editions upon request. Inform the GM of your preference, or ask for a recommendation. Rules explanations are always included, so the choice of edition mainly influences tone and detail.

How does Werewolf differ from D&D?

It is contemporary horror and activism, not dungeon crawling. You play shapeshifters in a realm of spirits, crime, and corporate exploitation. The system employs pools of d10s, rather than classes and levels. Pack bonds and oaths are as significant as combat. Conflicts are swift and brutal, but many scenes involve investigation, diplomacy, and rites. Rage is a resource with real consequences, so pushing too hard can lead to repercussions. Loot and grid tactics take a back seat to narrative, ethics, and how your pack defends its territory.

What do we play, and how does the pack function?

You play as Garou, shapeshifters whose roles are defined by your Auspice and Tribe. Auspices correspond to roles such as warrior, mystic, scout, judge, or visionary. Tribes influence your values and taboos. Your pack selects a totem, earns Renown, and oversees a territory. You strategise together, split up to gather information, and come together for pivotal actions. Everyone has their moment in the spotlight. A professional Game Master utilises the pack to frame scenes, monitor bonds and oaths, and create opportunities for Gifts, rites, and teamwork to shine.

How intense is the horror, and is it suitable for teenagers?

Werewolf explores mature themes such as violence, environmental damage, and identity. It is most suitable for older teenagers and adults. A professional Game Master will establish content boundaries with you, utilise safety tools, and can adjust the tone from gritty to hopeful. You can request less gore, fewer real-world details, or a greater emphasis on mythic elements. If you have a particular atmosphere in mind, browse styles and select a suitable option at GM playstyles. The aim is to achieve catharsis and connection, rather than discomfort.

Is it possible for a small group of 2 or 3 players to work?

Yes. A two or three player group is ideal for intense, perilous narratives. The GM adjusts challenges, can introduce an NPC packmate if desired, and creates scenarios that reward stealth, investigation, and clever tactics. With five or six players, anticipate wider roles, larger set pieces, and increased political intrigue. In either case, scenes are structured so that each player acts with intent and the pack remains coordinated. Inform the GM of your preferred pace and spotlight balance during the planning phase.

What players think

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a really good job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot and yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His attitude was fantastic, and he made the game enjoyable for all. I particularly appreciated how he could clearly explain what was required from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a wonderful time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thank you!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I arranged a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is very enthusiastic about it, and he was thoroughly pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • A very good GM, Baptiste adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. One issue was with the character sheets provided, which were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells (no healing spell) even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they'd ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach enabled the players to fully immerse themselves in the game by allowing them to control how they wanted their actions to be carried out. I would certainly work with her again.

    John

  • A pleasant and straightforward introduction to D&D. Amber was adept at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the rhythm and concentrate on the narrative. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack strategies was an enjoyable experience and provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a highly enjoyable session.

  • Pim is truly brilliant as a DM! Cheerful, adaptable, and exceptionally experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in an enjoyable manner and engaged every player in the story, regardless of whether they were vocal or reserved. If you embark on an adventure with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
