Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay is a dark, grounded fantasy set in the Old World, a realm of muddy streets, scheming guilds, and lurking Chaos. You are not shining heroes; you are rat catchers, roadwardens, and hedge witches striving to survive. Players appreciate the sharp blend of investigation, political tension, and sudden violence. Magic feels perilous, steel feels final, and even a whisper can escalate into a conspiracy. A professional Game Master embraces the black humour and the stakes, ensuring that every clue, bribe, and decision carries weight.

A session resembles a grim thriller with moments of laughter. You follow leads, interrogate suspects, skulk through back alleys and dense forests, then confront harsh consequences. It appeals to adults who relish mysteries, tough choices, and character-driven gameplay. Perfect for newcomers seeking guidance, as well as veterans pursuing authentic Old World grit. Ideal for one-shots at gatherings or as a long campaign for teams and friend groups. To find a suitable match, see our Game Masters.

How to play Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Most tables use the 4th Edition's percentile rules. You roll two d10s as a d100, aiming to roll at or below a skill or characteristic. Your margin becomes Success Levels that shape the outcome. On your turn, you state what you are attempting, the Game Master calls for a test, you roll, and the story progresses. Opposed tests resolve chases, debates, and duels. Combat is deadly, momentum grants advantage, and critical hits or spell miscasts can change the course of a scene.

Players bring a flawed character and a willingness to collaborate. A professional Game Master provides the Old World, the clues and adversaries, the maps and handouts, and ensures rules and consequences are clear. For a one-shot, expect pre-generated characters and a focused case or heist that teaches the basics. For a campaign, you choose or develop a career, track wounds and income, and face lasting consequences like injuries or corruption. Play in person or online; see our online play page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we need Warhammer lore or rules to begin?

Not at all. You can join in with no prior knowledge of Warhammer. A professional Game Master will explain the tone, setting, and core rules as you play. For one-shots, you receive pre-generated characters and a quick walkthrough. For campaigns, session zero will cover careers, expectations, and content limits. Familiarity with The Witcher vibe is helpful, but not essential. All you need are dice and a sense of curiosity. The details of the Old World will be revealed at the table.

Which edition do you run, and can we choose 4th, 2nd, or 3rd?

Most tables use 4th Edition for its clear percentile system and Success Levels. Some Game Masters also offer 2nd Edition, which plays quickly and feels familiar, and 3rd Edition with its custom dice and cards. 1st Edition is available on request. Please mention your preference when booking, or ask for advice if you are unsure. Check individual bios to see which editions they run on our Game Masters.

How lethal is WFRP combat and what happens if my character dies?

WFRP is inherently perilous. Critical hits, infections, and unfortunate events can alter a scene rapidly. Your Game Master signals risk and provides significant choices. In 4e and 2e, you have Fortune and Fate to influence a roll or prevent death, along with Resilience and Resolve in 4e. Healing is gradual, so steering clear of confrontations is wise. If a character does perish, the Game Master can seamlessly introduce a new character to maintain the flow of the story.

How does WFRP differ from D&D?

In comparison to D&D, WFRP is less powerful and more grim. You start as ordinary individuals, rather than heroic class builds. Careers dictate your development, finances are important, and social status can provide opportunities. The rules employ percentile tests and opposed checks. Combat is harsh and typically a last resort. Magic is perilous and may have unintended consequences. Sessions centre on investigation, intrigue, and survival, featuring dark humour and difficult decisions rather than dungeon crawling and high fantasy.

Is this game suitable for children or sensitive groups?

WFRP explores themes of disease, corruption, cults, and grim violence. It is not suitable for children. For adult or mixed-sensitivity groups, your Game Master can adjust the tone. A professional Game Master establishes boundaries and uses safety tools, including fading to black when necessary. You can maintain the intrigue and difficult choices while reducing gore or body horror. Inform your Game Master of your limits in advance, and they will work within them.

Is WFRP better for a one-shot or a long campaign?

Both formats are effective, but they offer different experiences. A one-shot provides a concise investigation or a thrilling journey, typically featuring pregenerated characters, and teaches the rules as you play. In contrast, a campaign develops characters over time, allowing for injuries, recurring adversaries, and the complexities of corruption and politics to unfold. You can expect a satisfying one-shot to last between 3 to 4 hours. For campaigns, many groups prefer to engage in 6 to 12 sessions before deciding whether to continue the storyline.

Can we play online with maps and resources?

Yes. WFRP runs smoothly online on Roll20, Foundry, or Fantasy Grounds, with character sheets, dice rollers, and handouts integrated. Your Game Master can opt for minimal maps for quicker play or utilise tactical maps for intense battles. Audio and video are optional. If you are new to virtual play, this page explains tools and options in one place: online play platforms.

What players think

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a really good job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot and yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His attitude was fantastic, and he made the game enjoyable for all. I particularly appreciated how he could clearly explain what was required from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a wonderful time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thank you!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I arranged a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is very enthusiastic about it, and he was thoroughly pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • A very good GM, Baptiste adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. One issue was with the character sheets provided, which were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells (no healing spell) even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they'd ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach enabled the players to fully immerse themselves in the game by allowing them to control how they wanted their actions to be carried out. I would certainly work with her again.

    John

  • A pleasant and straightforward introduction to D&D. Amber was adept at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the rhythm and concentrate on the narrative. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack strategies was an enjoyable experience and provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a highly enjoyable session.

  • Pim is truly brilliant as a DM! Cheerful, adaptable, and exceptionally experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in an enjoyable manner and engaged every player in the story, regardless of whether they were vocal or reserved. If you embark on an adventure with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
