Mythic Bastionland

Mythic Bastionland is an Arthurian adventure with a folkloric twist. You play as a band of knights traversing a mythical landscape filled with crumbling halls, sacred groves, and watchful spirits. Sessions evoke the feeling of stepping into a half-remembered legend, where hospitality is valued, oaths are binding, and the wild has its own rules. The tone is reflective and tense, featuring moments of wonder and sharp peril.

It is ideal for newcomers seeking a straightforward, fast-paced game, as well as for veterans who appreciate meaningful choices and exploration. Groups of friends, families, or colleagues can all find the right atmosphere, ranging from cosy fireside stories to stark frontier challenges. A session can be conducted in person or online with a professional Game Master leading your adventure.

How to play Mythic Bastionland

Play is straightforward. You declare what your knight attempts. When the outcome is risky or uncertain, you make a simple save with a single die, and damage is determined using small dice. Armour and positioning can mitigate harm, and conditions are more significant than lengthy rule lookups. Turns progress quickly, with the Game Master establishing clear stakes and consequences, then resolving results to keep the story flowing.

You bring a knight concept, a few goals, and the mindset to treat oaths and hospitality with respect. There is no need to study the rules. A professional Game Master provides a living map of the Reach you explore, engaging encounters, fair rulings, and the tools for travel, courtly scenes, and combat.

For a one-shot, expect a focused quest such as a fey bargain, a beast hunt, or a trial of honour, with a satisfying conclusion in two to three hours. In a campaign, your group traverses a Reach over many sessions, forging alliances, acquiring scars and small boons, and altering the land through your choices. Advancement remains light, while consequences and relationships deepen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know the rules or Arthurian legends?

No preparation is necessary. A professional Game Master will teach the rules as you play, using clear prompts and quick rolls. You only need a basic character idea for a knight, along with a few personal goals. The table clarifies customs such as guest-right, oaths, and courtly etiquette when relevant. If you are familiar with the legends, that’s excellent, but it is not essential. The game uses folklore as atmosphere and guidance, not as homework, allowing newcomers to join in with ease.

How does Mythic Bastionland differ from D&D?

It is lighter, lower magic, and quicker to resolve. You won’t be juggling long spell lists or complex builds. Advancement remains modest, while choices and consequences do the heavy lifting. Travel, customisation, and negotiation sit alongside combat, and fights are swift and risky, with positioning and armour reducing harm. You roll a single die when outcomes are uncertain, then move on. Curious how it compares to other systems we run? Browse our all-games overview here: See more game systems.

Who are we playing as, and can our characters use magic?

You play sworn knights journeying through a mythic countryside, upholding your honour while seeking solutions to peculiar troubles. Open spellcasting is uncommon. Magic typically manifests as blessings, relics, oaths, and bargains with otherworldly powers, rather than a daily toolkit. If someone desires a mystical touch, the Game Master can incorporate sacred rites, enchanted items, or favours earned from spirits. Courtly skills, hospitality, and oaths are just as important as blades.

How perilous is it? Will our knights fall easily?

Peril is genuine, but danger is indicated. You will frequently endure conditions, injuries, or damaged equipment before a fatal conclusion. Assessing the situation, selecting your ground wisely, and respecting hospitality can prevent bloodshed. Conflicts are quick and intense, so retreat and negotiation are wise strategies. If a character does fall, a new squire or companion can join swiftly, ensuring no one is left out. The table agrees on tone and safety before play.

What group size and session length are most effective here?

Mythic Bastionland is best suited for 2 to 6 players. Sessions typically last around 2 to 3 hours. Smaller groups create an intimate and focused atmosphere, ideal for a single vow or a complex fey bargain. Larger groups excel in councils, feasts, and journeys where the advice of each knight is significant. A one-shot generally resolves one clear issue by the conclusion. In a campaign, your actions have far-reaching effects as alliances form and scars build up.

Is it suitable for children or mixed-age groups?

Yes. The chivalric framework supports themes such as courtesy, bravery, and keeping promises, and the Game Master can soften or omit grisly details. Challenges become puzzles, choices, and social tests rather than gore. Before play, you can establish boundaries and preferred tone. What players think

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a really good job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot and yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His attitude was fantastic, and he made the game enjoyable for all. I particularly appreciated how he could clearly explain what was required from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a wonderful time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thank you!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I arranged a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is very enthusiastic about it, and he was thoroughly pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • A very good GM, Baptiste adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. One issue was with the character sheets provided, which were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells (no healing spell) even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they'd ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach enabled the players to fully immerse themselves in the game by allowing them to control how they wanted their actions to be carried out. I would certainly work with her again.

    John

  • A pleasant and straightforward introduction to D&D. Amber was adept at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the rhythm and concentrate on the narrative. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack strategies was an enjoyable experience and provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a highly enjoyable session.

  • Pim is truly brilliant as a DM! Cheerful, adaptable, and exceptionally experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in an enjoyable manner and engaged every player in the story, regardless of whether they were vocal or reserved. If you embark on an adventure with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
