Fiasco

Fiasco is a modern classic of disastrous ambition. You play ordinary crooks, lovers, and schemers whose plans spiral into chaos. Sessions feel cinematic, built from punchy scenes, sharp twists, and gallows humour. There is no preparation for players, and no rules lecture. A professional Game Master facilitates the GMless format, keeps the spotlight moving, and ensures everyone shines. It is ideal for adults who enjoy improv, shared storytelling, and dark comedy.

One-shot capers run for 2 to 3 hours for 3 to 5 players, making it perfect for a bold game night, a birthday, or a team offsite. Beginners jump in quickly, while veterans savour the tension. Want a specific vibe, from gritty noir to wild farce? Your Game Master provides tailored playsets and safety tools. Browse available GMs and book your table at our Game Masters page.

How to play Fiasco

Fiasco runs in scenes. On your turn, you either set the scene or decide its outcome, then everyone roleplays to discover what happens. Outcomes are simply good or bad for your character, indicated with a die in Fiasco Classic or an outcome card in the 2019 boxed edition. Halfway through, a Tilt element crashes in and raises the stakes. In the finale, the Aftermath reveals where every character ends up, from a lucky escape to jail, ruin or worse. A professional Game Master guides the flow and keeps timing sharp, allowing the table to focus on bold choices.

You bring curiosity, a willingness to improvise, and an understanding of your character’s desires. No preparation or character sheet calculations are needed. The Game Master provides playsets, cards or dice, example scene prompts, and safety tools. One-shots deliver a complete crime story in 2 to 3 hours. For longer play, you can run a linked series using the same town or crew, or an anthology of standalone capers. Your facilitator adapts to the vibe you want, from grounded noir to farce. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience in improv or rules to play?

Not at all. A professional Game Master guides the flow at the table, begins with a quick setup using a playset, and demonstrates how to frame scenes and select outcomes. You can ask for assistance at any time. The group shares ideas and supports one another. If you enjoy improvising from prompts or trying out a voice for a scene, you’re all set. There are no character builds, spell lists, or maps to manage.

Which edition do you use, cards or dice?

Our Game Masters run both the 2019 card-driven edition and the 2009 Classic with dice and tables. By default, they use 2nd Edition, which is quick to teach and ensures clear outcomes. If you prefer Classic, just mention it when booking. In person, the GM brings the decks or dice. Online, they utilise digital card tools or simple substitutes. Either way, you experience the same arc of setup, rising chaos, a mid-session Tilt, and an Aftermath that reveals where everyone ends up.

How does Fiasco differ from D&D or Pathfinder?

There is no permanent GM and no tactical combat system. Play is structured around scenes, not rounds, with an emphasis on choices and consequences rather than loot or levels. Characters are everyday schemers, not heroes. You do not achieve success by optimising a build. Instead, you succeed by crafting a sharp, memorable caper together. A professional Game Master aids in pacing, tone, and safety without taking on the role of a referee. If you prefer improv and crime comedy over dungeon crawling, Fiasco is a great fit.

What tone and content can we expect? Is it suitable for the workplace?

Expect crime, betrayal, and dark humour. Themes may involve violence, sex, or substance use, although none should be depicted on screen. Before play, your facilitator will conduct a quick lines and veils check and utilise safety tools to ensure everyone is comfortable. For corporate groups, request a PG-13 caper with cleaner language and softer consequences. For home groups, you can opt for a grittier or broader farce. Read about facilitation approaches at GM playstyles.

How many players are there and how long does a session last?

Fiasco is best played with 3 to 5 players. Two hours is sufficient for a tight caper, while three hours allows for a more leisurely exploration of the Tilt and the Aftermath. If you have five players, aim for closer to three hours to ensure everyone has their moment in the spotlight. The facilitator ensures that scenes remain focused, allowing you to conclude with a complete story rather than a cliffhanger.

Can we link Fiasco sessions together to create a short series?

Yes. While each session tells a complete story, you can connect games by using the same town, a recurring location, or side characters who take centre stage next time. Your Game Master keeps track of callbacks and loose ends, then curates playsets that align with the evolving tone. Think of it as a TV season of interconnected escapades, rather than a level-based campaign. Three to six sessions work well, with a rotating cast of leads if someone is unable to attend.

How does online play function for Fiasco?

It works brilliantly on video. Your Game Master sets up a shared table for the 2019 edition cards or a clear dice pool if using Classic, along with a video room that has reliable audio. You will need a webcam, a microphone, and a quiet space. The game does not utilise a battle map, so bandwidth requirements are minimal. Expect a brief tech check, then straight into the scenes. What players think

  • First of all, I want to say that Sebastian was really great as a DM. For his first run as a booked DM, he did a really good job. The 3 stars refer to the following: 1. We were disappointed that the adventure was labelled a One Shot and yet wasn't a complete story. Discovering that there are two more parts wasn't very positive for us, as it meant there was no satisfying conclusion to the story. 2. As new players, it was difficult for us to understand the English character sheets in such a short time. In German, it would have been much easier. Even receiving the character sheets a few days in advance would have been helpful for preparation. 3. More guidance would be beneficial. Especially for beginners, a more linear one shot would have been preferable. We wasted a large portion of the adventure time doing unnecessary things because we didn't really know how the game worked. Overall, I think the StoryForgers concept is really good and I see a lot of potential in it, especially for introducing new players to D&D. I hope you don't take my feedback the wrong way but as honest criticism. Best regards, Mario

  • Bryan was exceptional. We had a group with varying levels of experience, and he managed to keep everyone engaged and involved. His attitude was fantastic, and he made the game enjoyable for all. I particularly appreciated how he could clearly explain what was required from our less experienced players while keeping our more seasoned players on their toes with his extensive knowledge of the game. Everyone in our party had a wonderful time thanks to Bryan.

    Jeremy

  • Dayron was fantastic. Well-prepared, punctual, and had a brilliant sense of humour.

    Corey

  • Dayron was fantastic; he provided an excellent experience. Thank you!

    The Merry Meeple

  • The game was incredibly engaging. I arranged a session as a gift for my boyfriend, who is very enthusiastic about it, and he was thoroughly pleased and appreciated Leonardo's professionalism. I don't have much experience with DnD, but I found the game to be quite straightforward and enjoyable.

    Marina

  • A very good GM, Baptiste adapted well to our group and helped us progress in this one-shot. One issue was with the character sheets provided, which were not complete or clear. Some of the French translations were rather approximate. For instance, our cleric was missing spells (no healing spell) even though they were meant to have some.

    Pierre

  • Rachel was fantastic; my daughter and her friends left their game saying it was the most fun they'd ever had, and my daughter wanted to sign up for another game with her straight away. She was friendly, and her approach enabled the players to fully immerse themselves in the game by allowing them to control how they wanted their actions to be carried out. I would certainly work with her again.

    John

  • A pleasant and straightforward introduction to D&D. Amber was adept at explaining and guiding the game, allowing us as players to quickly get into the rhythm and concentrate on the narrative. Collaborating with my colleagues to devise attack strategies was an enjoyable experience and provided valuable insights into each other's characters, thought processes, and differences. Overall, I found it to be a highly enjoyable session.

  • Pim is truly brilliant as a DM! Cheerful, adaptable, and exceptionally experienced. With a group of novice players, he managed to create an amazing experience in just a few hours. He maintained control in an enjoyable manner and engaged every player in the story, regardless of whether they were vocal or reserved. If you embark on an adventure with him, it will certainly be unforgettable!
